Raising Awareness for Myositis
Cycling 4,200 miles Across America June 2021
I finished in 17 days, 14 hours, 23 minutes.
* 2nd place finish overall when compared to IRL (in real life).
* 1st women to finish.
* Beat the current women’s record of 18 days, 0 hours, 10 minutes.
February I got the sad news that they were not sure that TABR was even going to happen again this year. I didn’t want to put it off. I knew I was ready. Even if the race did happen in real life, I didn’t have all my bike parts that I needed to make the trek, nor was I able to even get a new bike on time. That’s when it was suggested to me that I do it on a virtual platform called RGT.... WOW what a GREAT plan B!!
I decided that since it was going to be virtual, I should have a goal/target... why not beat the current women’s record?!
All the months of prepping, of crossing off lists, double checking that everything was in place. Triple checking, quadruple checking... D day was here!!
I have never felt so ready for something in my life. I was so excited (as I am any time I have a long day of cycling) that I had a hard time sleeping. The best way I can describe this feeling is like Christmas morning... that’s how excited I get for long days in the saddle.
The first day was perfect, if I kept at that pace I would have finished in 15 days!
The weather & my body had different plans for me. The challenges kept coming one by one... thankfully one at a time! They came early on. So, I was still coherent enough to take a step back and ask myself what needed to be done. Never once did I want to throw in the towel. I wanted more than anything to finish but I wasn’t willing to risk my health for breaking a record. My team was soooo supportive with this and instantly switched gears of “we need to beat the goal” to “let’s get K8 to the end in one piece”
To my teammates.... every single one of you are AMAZING and have helped me in so many ways, I don’t even know how to thank you.
Since TABR has been done, there is an emptiness, but there is also a feeling of accomplishment! I am proud of what I’ve done. I did it for me, not to prove anything to anyone else... which makes this accomplishment really special.
I feel AMAZING! No leg pain, no knee pain, no back pain, no neck pain. I feel like I could just keep going! What needs healing is my weight and my numb hands... yes, hands of all things!
You can bet there will be something else... real soon!
I’m training to do the Trans American Bike Race (TABR). Not only to do it, but to beat the current women’s fastest time, which is 18 days and 10 min. That’s over 4,200 miles and reaching 150,000 ft in elevation total and starts on June 6th.
Due to the current COVID conditions and with all of the uncertainties from State to State, with not being able to get a bike or even bike parts/components in a timely fashion. I’m not going to be able to do the TABR in real life in 2021.
HOWEVER, ((Drumroll)) I will be doing it on a virtual platform called RGT!! RGT allows cyclist's to upload actual roads in GPX format so you can ride the actual road (length and slope/grade).
I’m looking to keep to the rules and have it self supported once the ride starts. My bike breaks, I fix it. Taking care of my food, my laundry etc...
I’m grateful to have a great team of friends to help me get the whole route uploaded and ready to ride. I am grateful for their time and effort in making this happen.
I’m also grateful for RGT for having a platform available for me to do this on and for the community it has put me in contact with and for the support to do this ride. I have never met a more supportive community where people lift you up like I have here.
My team is in the process of working out the logistics of length and time of roads. But roughly we are looking at 15 hours on the bike and an average of 280 miles a day.
I know that I can’t compare it to real life, even though I will be riding the actual roads minus the elements. However, I look at it as a great learning opportunity for me to figure out fuel and figure out my mental and physical capabilities so that I can totally crush it in 2022!!
Looking forward to sharing this journey with all of you!
